Add to that, we'll also give you an insanely simple recipe to make your very own homemade hydration drink, one we tinkered with in our own kitchen until it actually tasted good and did its job. In this economy? We save those precious bucks whenever we can!
What Are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in water. That charge is what lets your nerves send signals and your muscles contract. Two of the most important electrolytes for everyday hydration are sodium and potassium. Sodium helps your body hold on to water and maintain blood volume. Potassium helps muscles and the heart work properly. When you sweat a lot you lose sodium and some potassium. Drinking only plain water can dilute the sodium in your blood and leave you feeling weak or crampy, a state clinicians call hyponatremia. ¹ A balanced drink replaces both fluid and the key minerals.
Carbohydrates also play a role. A small amount of sugar or natural sweetener helps the body absorb sodium and water more efficiently: the gut moves sodium and glucose together, pulling water along with them. Here's the honest part most drink brands skip: you don't need an electrolyte mix all day, every day. For a normal desk day, a gentle walk, or an easy workout under about 45–60 minutes, plain water does the job; your regular meals already replace the small amount of minerals you lose.
Reach for a homemade hydration drink when you've actually lost a meaningful amount through sweat or illness, such as:
- Workouts or sport lasting longer than an hour, or shorter sessions where you're visibly sweaty and salt-crusted.
- Hot, humid days, hikes, or manual labor outdoors.

Homemade Electrolyte Drink Recipe
Making your own drink gives you control over sugar, flavor, and electrolyte balance. It is cost-effective and flexible. You can make a small batch for a single outing or a larger batch for a weekend trip.
You can also tailor the mix to dietary preferences, such as vegan or lower-sugar ones. Compared with many commercial sports drinks, you can reduce added colors, flavors, and excess sugar while still getting the minerals you need.
How We Landed on This Recipe
We didn't get here on the first try. In our test kitchen we started the way a lot of recipes online do (straight coconut water with a big pinch of salt), and it was frankly too sweet and a little sea-water salty. So we started adjusting.
We tested salt levels from a heavy 1/4 teaspoon down to a barely-there 1/16 teaspoon, tasting each against how it felt to actually sip during a workout. A quarter-teaspoon delivered plenty of sodium but tasted like broth; 1/16 teaspoon (about 200 mg of sodium per serving) hit the sweet spot: you can tell it's there, but you'd happily drink a whole glass. We diluted the coconut water roughly 1 part coconut water to 4 parts water, which softened the sweetness and, more importantly, nudged the sodium-to-potassium ratio closer to what your body wants for rehydration rather than a potassium-heavy pour.
The teaspoon of honey (or maple, for our vegan testers) does double duty: it rounds out the salt and adds just enough carbohydrate to help the sodium and water absorb. A squeeze of citrus was the final touch: it made the whole thing taste like a drink instead of a remedy. The version below is the one that kept getting reached for.

Storage, Shelf Life & Making It Ahead
Refrigerate whenever possible. Because this drink uses fresh ingredients and has no preservatives, treat it like fresh juice rather than a shelf-stable sports drink.

Can I use table salt instead of sea salt?
Yep! Table salt works. Do measure carefully, because different salts have different grain sizes: fine table salt packs more sodium per teaspoon than flaky sea salt, so start on the lighter side.
Isn't coconut water good enough on its own?
Coconut water is a good source of potassium but low in sodium. For heavy sweating seshes, add sea salt to replace sodium losses.
Why dilute coconut water? Can't it just be coconut water with some sea salt?
It's all about the ratio. Sure, you're absolutely free to do pure coconut water and sea salt, but the dilution helps you target a better sodium-to-potassium ratio for rehydration.
